Active & Alive!/¡Vivo y Activo!
The Diabetes Prevention & Control Program is partnering with community
agencies to encourage people with
diabetes to become more physically active.
Active & Alive offers walking clubs, physical activity classes and
special events based on the belief that these activities improve the
health of people with diabetes.
This community physical activity program was developed to provide services
to two rural communities in Southwestern New Mexico, bordering Mexico,
with a high prevalence of diabetes and incidence of overweight. The program
has been running since January 2005.
Background
The Active & Alive program was created with the input of about 100 people with diabetes. Their recommendations were incorporated into Active & Alive which offers:
- Experienced instructors
- Groups comprised of similar others
- Safe place for activity
- Special events
- Incentives
- Advice from physicians
- Success stories from local people
You can be Active & Alive!
Senior centers and other community groups are invited to partner with us to create their own Active & Alive program. For more information, contact the Diabetes Prevention and Control Program at 1-888-523-2966.
