Professional Newsletters

Kitchen Creations is a cooking school for people with diabetes and their families. It is supported jointly by the Diabetes Prevention and Control Program and the New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service. The Kitchen Creations Faculty Newsletter was developed for diabetes management professionals who are teaching this important program to people with diabetes and their families. Below is a list of newsletters published for the past two years, with links to the newsletters and an outline of content topics.

September 2006

  • Type 2 diabetes in youth has increased 10 times in the last 10-15 years. Lifestyle patterns such as drinking soda, eating fast food and watching television increase childhood overweight. Overweight is a risk factor for diabetes.
  • Links are given for Tips for Kids with Type 2 Diabetes from the National Diabetes Education Program.
  • Websites with information for children with diabetes are listed.
  • Helpful diabetes web sites are listed.
  • A link to education materials for people with diabetes is given.
  • A link to “Nutrition Recommendations and Interventions for Diabetes” is given. This is a brand new position statement

June 2006

  • Evidence to support whole grains, fruits and vegetables in the American diet — low fiber intake and low fruit intake play a role in obesity. When fiber from whole wheat, brown rice and barley was included daily, blood pressure fell, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol fell, and HDL cholesterol rose.
  • Online continuing education credits — Continuing education from the American Association of Diabetes Educators is listed.
  • Sharps Disposal — Proper disposal of sharps (syringes and lancets) is described.  Public Health Offices in New Mexico with drop boxes for sharps are listed.
  • Diabetes Prevention and Control Program Web Site — Get diabetes facts, Kitchen Creations cooking schools schedule and more from the DPCP web site.
  • Whole Grains — The Dietary Guidelines recommend that at least half of the grain servings be whole grain. Two web sites with information on whole grains and recipes for whole grains are given.

  • FDA Approves Inhaled Insulin — Inhaled insulin is comparable to regular insulin
  • U.S. Teens are at Risk for Heart Disease and Diabetes — Treadmill tests on teens 12 to 19 years showed that 34% were in bad physical shape
  • Two Million Teens in the U.S. Have Pre-Diabetes — The rate for pre-diabetes was higher for boys than for girls
