The New Mexico Diabetes Advisory Council (DAC)

The New Mexico Diabetes Advisory Council (DAC) was formed in September 1993 to address the serious issues facing New Mexicans with diabetes. The DAC comprises a broad spectrum of individuals and groups concerned with diabetes. The general membership is now over 500 and is made up of nurses, dietitians, physicians and representatives from clinics, pueblos, educational institutions, organizations and others.

An Executive Committee and a Core Council serve as the leadership body of the DAC.

The mission of the DAC is to reduce the burden of diabetes on individuals, families, communities, the health care system and the state by:

  • Increasing public and provider awareness of diabetes
  • Advocating for legislation, policies and programs to improve access to care and to improve the treatment and outcomes for people with diabetes
  • Representing public and private partners to coordinate activities that promote quality of care for people with diabetes
  • Serving in an advisory capacity to the New Mexico Department of Health Diabetes Prevention and Control Program
