Community Programs

Active & Alive!/¡Vivo y Activo!

The Diabetes Prevention & Control Program is partnering with community agencies to support a local intervention that encourages people with diabetes in Grant and Hidalgo counties to become more physically active. Active & Alive offers walking clubs, physical activity classes and special events based on the belief that these activities improve the health of people with diabetes.

This community physical activity program was developed to provide services to two rural communities in Southwestern New Mexico, bordering Mexico, with a high prevalence of diabetes and incidence of overweight. The program has been running since January 2005; Phase 2 started in January 2006.

Background

The Active & Alive program was created from focus group findings. The focus groups, which involved about 100 people with diabetes in Grant County, recommended ways to increase motivation and break down barriers related to physical activity. These included:

  • Experienced instructors
  • Groups comprised of similar others
  • Safe place for activity
  • Special events
  • Incentives
  • Advice from physicians
  • Success stories from local people

The program was implemented to respond to these criteria. We hope that the materials provided on this page will be useful elements for communities thinking about starting a similar program.
